Discord says your file is too big — the current limit and the fix

You drop an image into a Discord channel and instead of sending, you get the too-large error screen. It's a picture, not a movie — how is it over the limit?

The current limit

Per Discord's official File Attachments FAQ (checked 2026-08-28): for non-Nitro users the maximum upload is 20 MB. Nitro raises it. The FAQ also notes Discord is "currently experimenting with various file upload size limits", so some accounts may see different numbers — if your error says something else, believe your error screen.

How an image gets past 20 MB

• Phone photos — modern phone cameras produce 8–15 MB per shot routinely; burst a couple into one message and you're over.
• PNG screenshots of photos — PNG is lossless, and lossless encoding of photographic content is enormous. A full-screen 4K screenshot as PNG can pass 20 MB on its own.
• Scans — scanners default to high DPI; a letter-size page at 600 DPI is a huge bitmap.

Getting under the cap without wrecking the image

For photographic content the answer is JPG at high quality: the size drops by several times before any difference is visible in a chat window. Our compressor runs in your browser — your file never leaves your machine, which matters when the thing you're sharing is a screenshot of something private. If a result ever comes out larger than your original, we hand back the original instead.

When compression is the wrong tool

If the image is a text-heavy screenshot that must stay pixel-sharp — code, a contract, fine UI detail — heavy JPG compression will smear the text. In that case resize the dimensions down instead (a 4K screenshot rarely needs to be 4K in chat) and keep the quality high.

What we deliberately don't do

We don't split files, host them, or generate share links. Everything here stays a plain local file that you then send wherever you like — Discord today, something else tomorrow.
